About
Saïd Afifi
Born in 1983 in Casablanca, Said Afifi is a visual artist and video maker. Trained at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan and at Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts (France), his visual work - photographic and video - is nourished by science fiction and the world of video games. His practice questions the political, social and aesthetic writing modalities of ultra-modernity. Afifi has been exploring postmodern architecture since 2012 by adding a chaotic and utopian dimension to it, drawing the contours of a cold and sterile aesthetic. Now using a position of observer, he attempts to metaphorically question the political, social and economic conditions that led to the advent of ultra-modernist architecture. Afifi has exhibited at Institut du Monde Arabe and Cité des Arts in Paris, as well as at the 'Parallel Projects' of the Marrakech Biennale in Morocco. He has also been selected for the Gwangju Biennale in Korea.

Yemaya is a virtual reality installation that attempts to tell a story to link the approach the research in underwater biology with the first experiments in underwater photography developed by Louis Boutan at Banyuls sur mer in 1893, and all the research carried out by a CNRS (the French national center for scientific research) laboratory at the bottom of the Mediterranean abyss. The 360 video, is a meditative walk that is working as a visual enigma, inviting us to contemplate the mysteries of the underwater caves. They have been realized entirely by photogrammetry and underwater scan technology, revealing a hypnotic, fascinating but also extremely fragile landscape.
The aim of the installation is to focus on the state of the Mediterranean basin marked by: the phenomenon of migration, the disappearance of ecosystems that civilization did not even discover from the angle of a time when images were not really acquired, the one of photography’s advent.

To the public
Because of the health regulations related to the Covid-19 and in order to limit the risks of contamination, Yemaya is not presented in virtual reality, to avoid the use of the equipment by several people. The alternative projection that has been drawn to bring together pieces selected by the artist, taken from the original video of Yemaya, and a demonstrative video of the experiment.
